I take always considered myself to be a tiresome reader and have always wanted to meliorate my speed. I once had a professor who had taken the Evelyn Wood program and could read through his students' research papers at an amazing speed. Because I did non want to spend a lot of coin taking the actual class, I decided to requite this book a try. Although I cannot read with the speed that others have attained by taking the grade, I have to admit that this volume has allowed me to increase my speed somewhat. I have always considered myself to be a slow reader and have always wanted to better my speed. Because I did not desire to spend a lot of coin taking the actual grade, I decided to give this book a try. Although I cannot read with the speed that others have attained past taking the class, I have to acknowledge that this book has immune me to increase my speed somewhat. This book describes how to prepare yourself for reading, make your environment conducive to reading, and use manus movements to aid in gaining speed, equally well as other techniques. One matter that I discovered is that by reading faster, my mind is forced to concentrate more, and therefore I do non find my thoughts wandering as much as they used to exercise. If y'all are interested in increasing your reading speed or comprehension, I suggest giving this volume a try. ...more

This book was recommended to me by a prof at McMaster University who has it equally required reading for his first twelvemonth INQUIRY students. The chat started when I questioned why he added it as required rather than optional. After chatting with him for about 15 minutes, and learning more about the book, I was convinced to pick it upwards and read information technology, fifty-fifty if all I got from it was the ability to read at twice my current speed. (I consider myself a slow reader and accept always wished I could read faster) - the volume promises tripling or quadrupling your reading speed; however, in all honesty, I figured it I only increased my reading speed or perchance fifty-fifty just doubled it, I'd be well ahead of where I currently stood and be able to read more in less fourth dimension (Yes, I'm afflicted with the sickness of buying way more books than I can read in a single twelvemonth - my "to read" pile far exceeds my ability to keep upward)

I not only learned a few techniques to help me read faster (I'k non nevertheless double my previous reading speed, but I'm working on information technology, and with practice, can get there), simply this is a book I wished I had when I was in academy. There are techniques for previewing chapters of textbooks and note-taking techniques that I'chiliad certain I would have actually benefited from. The book also includes tips and techniques for preparing for and taking tests and exams that would have been useful to me back in my academy days.

In whatsoever example, information technology was a worthwhile read, and for less than $ten, information technology was well worth reading. I'yard pretty sure that the students in his grade who actually invest but a couple of hours into this book and practicing some techniques are actually going to do improve not just in his class, but in all their classes.

Recommends information technology for: others wanting to meliorate their reading speed
It took me some time to finish this book because the author has you practicing the new reading techniques as yous become - and they aren't easy. :-o But, I am adamant to get upward to the 900 words per minute goal I set for myself at the outset. So, I'm practicing the new techniques I learned about on the current books I'm reading.

And then, I'1000 practicing the new techniques I learned about on the electric current books I'yard reading.

If you want to endeavour and get a speed reader, don't call back you're going to be Dr. Spencer Reid (from Criminal Minds) past the stop of the book. There is a lot to learn and it DOES accept practice. I've always had a loftier reading level and very good comprehension of what I read, only the techniques in this volume go against my instincts when reading and that's difficult to overcome.

For case; the first technique is to read "visually" rather than saying them mentally. I am making ho-hum progress on this one. But yesterday afterwards finishing the book, I found that the more I pushed myself to read faster, the fewer words I "said" to myself and the more I took them in with my eyes only. That is the first stride. ;-)

I have already improved my reading speed from about 350 words per infinitesimal to virtually 450. So, I am halfway to my goal in merely a week. The book suggests that subsequently a month of exercise, yous should exist able to reach your goal and mayhap surpass information technology, depending upon how difficult you work at information technology.

Readlax is a new app for people who want to acquire faster and more effectively. (promo)

"Wood program has helped more than than two million people read faster, more efficiently, and with improved comprehension and retention."

"The average person (and that includes the average pupil) reads at a rate of nigh 250 words per minute. However that aforementioned "average" person has been estimated to recall at an astounding rate of more than than 50,000 words per minute!"

"we remember much, much faster than nosotros read"

"she discovered that Richard had been reading at more than than 3,000 words per minute. Furthermore, a quiz on the book showed that he was reading with more than xc per centum comprehension."

"If the average student reads at 250 words per infinitesimal, it will take him near vii hours to read a two-hundred-folio book (bold that there are five hundred words to the page). Merely if that same student begins soaring along at the charge per unit of three,000 words per minute, he or she will be able to complete the same book in less than thirty-five minutes."

"I tin can guarantee that with serious exercise, most students and parents can move upwardly to 1,000 words per minute in simply a few weeks."

"Clearly, the possibilities of reading and learning faster and more efficiently are enormous."

"Your "Hidden Voice" Anybody'southward reading—except for those expert in the special Evelyn Wood learning skills—involves two dominant characteristics:
ane. The reading is accompanied by a "subconscious voice," a trend to pronounce the printed words silently or even to speak them in a barely audible murmur.
two. The reading is executed from left to right across the page, line by line, until the folio is finished. Then, the student moves through subsequent pages using the aforementioned line-by-line arroyo."

"Subvocal linear reading is clearly an important office of your repertoire of reading skills. Becoming skillful in this slower-paced technique will increment your reading speed far beyond its present rate and is an essential showtime footstep in Mentally Soaring with visual-vertical reading."

"200–400 words per minute. In this speed range, you are reading rather inefficiently. In that location are periodic or frequent regressions, where y'all stop and look dorsum over material yous've already supposedly read. Your mind tends to wander, and your concentration is relatively poor."

"400–600 words per minute. At this plateau, your subvocal linear reading has become more efficient. Yous regress infrequently, if at all, and are most likely making skilful apply of the simple underlining hand movement to pace yourself."

"600–900 words per minute. This is the highest possible speed for those using the subvocal linear approach. Information technology does correspond a significant level of accomplishment. At this level yous do not regress; your concentration is high; and your underlining hand motions and horizontal, linear centre movements are operating at their top level of efficiency."

"About 900 words per infinitesimal is the accented maximum speed a student can promise to reach by using the subvocal linear technique. In a sense, this speed represents a kind of "sound bulwark" for speed reading."

"The fastest, well-nigh efficient reading or studying begins with a specific purpose. Conversely, trying to read or report without a goal in mind will make learning more difficult."

"The top learners inquire their teachers questions about things they don't understand. Besides"

"The Foundations of Layered Reading. Principle 1: Y'all must larn to come across and take words and phrases out of their normal expectancy order. Principle 2: Accept visual, as opposed to auditory, reassurance as you read. Principle 3: Yous must learn to read vertically. Principle four: Understand the gestalt of what you read."

"you'll find that you apply your peripheral vision more than effectively: Y'all'll comprehend increasing numbers of words in that ane- to i-and-a-one-half-inch-diameter circle on the page where your optics focus. This power to brand better use of peripheral vision volition further enhance your ability to motion down the folio in groups of words, rather than across the folio, word by word."

"Without moving your optics from the focal point, y'all'll find that yous can take in countless other images around you—and that's part of what peripheral vision is all well-nigh."

"Every bit you lot exercise reading with your peripheral vision, you'll find that yous have a somewhat similar capacity. By allowing images to come in from all around your primal line of vision, you can have in many words and phrases that are off center from your main focus on the page. And the more than words you tin grasp at a glance, the more chop-chop yous'll move through any text."

"Layering, or the Multiple Reading Procedure, involves 5 steps: one. overview; ii. preview; 3. read; iv. postview; and 5. review."

"Overview: This process involves looking the entire book over quickly to determine its organisation, structure and tone. The primary goal is to understand the gestalt—the main thrust or big moving picture—of the book."

"Preview: Next, go through the reading assignment at the rate of about four seconds per page. During this phase the main goal is to absorb more detail and to brainstorm to draft an outline"

"As well, apply the preview to divide the affiliate into logical segments—a job which should be relatively easy with not-fiction texts, which are usually organized rather clearly. Headings for subsections, items printed in boldface, and other highlighted material can help you place the bones structure of the text."

"Read: The goal hither is to see every word on every page, and to assimilate and record all the essential information you need for taking tests or writing inquiry papers."

"Postview: With a nonfiction textbook, the postviewing should exist washed immediately after reading a affiliate. On the other hand, fiction—or nonfiction with a unmarried, strong narrative menstruation—may be postviewed as a whole."

"Review: At regular intervals, preferably about once a week, yous should expect over your remember patterns and refresh your memory of the material yous've read and how it relates to other materials in the course."

"Our experts have discovered that there are five levels of comprehension, which correspond roughly to the 5 phases of the Multiple Reading Process: Comprehension Level 1: In the overview phase, the educatee recognizes simply individual words and isolated concepts. Comprehension during this process is normally about ten–20 pct: that is, a educatee would exist expected to answer correctly only almost 1 to ii questions out of every ten on the material. Comprehension Level 2: With a very fast preview—say nigh two seconds per page—the pupil tin can recognize many more facts, including some key phrases and thoughts. He typically picks up enough information to score 20–40 percent on a comprehension exam. Comprehension Level 3: With a slower, more than careful preview (approximately iv seconds per page), the reader grasps meaningful patterns, main ideas and key themes. Comprehension at present moves up to the 40–sixty percent range. Comprehension Level 4: At a reading footstep slightly faster than the level at which the student feels well-nigh comfortable, he becomes fifty-fifty more skilful at recognizing meaningful patterns, chief ideas and themes. Comprehension at this level should bring scores of 60–80 pct. Comprehension Level 5: Finally, reading at a fast merely comfortable pace, the student takes in all the textile needed to practice well on a test or to satisfy other academic objectives. Comprehension should exist 80 percent or higher. Furthermore, combining reading with rereading, mail service-viewing and reviewing helps the educatee tap his highest academic abilities."

"For the fastest reading speeds, you lot must notice the four basic principles of layered reading: -Run across and accept words and phrases out of their normal gild. -Have visual reassurance every bit yous read. -Read vertically. -Empathize the gestalt."

"Anna. As a junior in high school, Anna'south reading charge per unit was 330 words per infinitesimal, and her level of comprehension was 65 percentage. She had go frustrated with her performance at schoolhouse, which ranged from B-minus to C-plus. So, on her ain initiative, she enrolled in i of the Evelyn Wood courses. Later only about one month of practise, her regular reading rate had risen to 1,440 words per minute, with a comprehension level of 85 percent."

"A number of observers have said that subvocal-linear reading is all "left-brain." That is, this slower type of reading centers mostly on the logical, give-and-take-by-discussion progression of thought on the written page. Visual-vertical reading, in contrast, is said to pull the more intuitive right brain into the process."

"For example, Ballad Romaniszak admits that her reading rate falls to one,000–1,200 words per minute, with 80 percent comprehension, when she'south not "in training." On the other hand, when she is in training, she works regularly at speeds of ii,000–3,000 words per infinitesimal with loftier levels of comprehension."

This volume has two titles information technology's had over the years, "Remember Everything y'all Read" and likewise, "The Evelyn Wood Seven-24-hour interval Speed Reading and Learning Programme." Ironically, this is a quick easy read... though I don't recommend it.

It's geared toward students with tips for note taking and examination preparation, and what lilliputian data it has for improving reading speed I've already learned in other places via a 5 minute Youtube video from Tim Ferriss (great tips there by the way). So, interesting - yes.

No answers.
Leaving us in the darkness book moves on to some learning techniques useful for high school or college kids - writing essays, lecture note-taking, preparing for exams, planning a term, all of these also very generally. And what with adults who already finished their schools? What with people who read for work? Or for pleasure? Or to exist up to engagement with fields they are interested in? We've been hugely ignored, which is ok, only shouldn't they put on the cover, that information technology'south targeted for students? But so the fashion is so dramatically dry, editing so sparse and layout and so dense and uninviting, that I don't picture many young people going past page three.
A book for nobody actually, context inadequate for adults, course inadequate for young readers. I don't recommend it.
Afterwards I did a inquiry (having already appetite for genuine speed reading) and found a book Speed reading by Abby Marks Beale - a 275 pages of serious practice, that finally works.

Then I read it. Honestly? I think information technology had some helpful advice, although the research I did afterward finishing information technology leads me to believe their claims of reading over 3000 words per minute are unrealistic and nigh people will top out well under m wpm. And there are other caveats: you won't be flipping through State of war and Peace in a solar day immediately after finishing Evelyn Wood. Mastering their system involves learning new techniques for reading, plus note-taking and written report if those activities are a part of your life, and abiding practise to keep up your skills. It's obviously aimed at people who read for piece of work, with the downside of their tactics existence that if you are reading for pleasure practicing these techniques - getting the book and your easily in the correct position, using the correct mitt movements, contesting the desire to snack - may plough your pleasure reading into work, defeating the purpose. Not an ideal situation if y'all're reading as your evening wind-downwardly; snuggled in bed, cozy and warm and sleepy, excited to wake upward at four in the morning with the volume open on your face. (Hello Dad) Evelyn Wood specifically mentions times where you may wish to slow back down and use your natural reading behaviour instead of their speed-reading techniques: if you lot are savouring the prose, reading a dumbo technical manual where yous don't accept a solid grasp of the vocabulary, or whatsoever especially complex piece of writing. Furthermore these techniques probably won't work at all on an eastward-reader (there'south a lot of flipping extremely speedily through the entire book, then going dorsum to the starting time) and would be challenging to employ to computers. So if the majority of your reading is on an electronic device you may not get anything out of this book at all. The near helpful techniques, I idea, were the ones related to note-taking, and the organisation of skimming each chapter before reading it in depth, which seemed to prepare up a kind of "mental framework" that fabricated it easier to retain important concepts. They merits their methods will increase your comprehension and retention of information. But the "secret" is to constantly review your notes. Of course your comprehension and memory will go up if you are rehashing your class notes every month. There's a lot of debate over whether it'south fifty-fifty possible to read as fast as this book claims, and if in the attempt yous are merely trading comprehension for speed. Which would make speed reading a consummate waste product of time; if you're reading 2500 words a minute but you only sympathize 300 of them yous are no better off than the average reader, and I suspect this book spends and so much time encouraging students to have notes and review their notes and texts constantly to assistance mitigate that trade off. Overall, I'm disappointed to realize I'll never truly be able to read and encompass 3000 plus words per minute, merely at least I didn't spend whatever money to observe that out. If yous tin can pick up this volume for gratis/inexpensive and you want some studying tips it might exist useful, merely I wouldn't sign up for the classes or spend any real money to get their secret recipe to reading success. ...more

I've oft heard of the famous (mayhap infamous) Evelyn Woods 'speed reading' protocol, and from personal experience, this book confirms the prevailing theory that such a scheme is unhelpful at best, a nefarious scam at worst. This is not to say that all of the methods in the book are wrong – indeed, leading manus motions can minimize regressions and meliorate speed. Nonetheless, that's perchance better suited to a newspaper article and/or helpful online web log mail service. Once the book moves into "mental soaring," information technology'due south clear the methodology has moved from substantive reading to skimming-and-praying.

Beyond the farcical nature of the touted program, perhaps virtually disturbing in this particular volume is the focus on anecdotal "success stories" (multiple students names Bobby, Timmy, Suzie, etc. who had poor grades and difficulty reading, only - gee willikers, Evelyn Woods courses fixed it! Hoorah!) and the blatant and consequent advertising for further paid courses. Frankly, I'thousand a chip surprised this was allowed in print as a "book" from Barnes & Noble, considering it would be much better suited to a vendor cart in New York City adjacent to the guru claiming Biblical conservancy for only $19.95 +tax.

If you're interested in reading faster with increased or similar comprehension, look into helpful leading mitt patterns, minimize line regression, and generally increase your reading frequency. You lot're welcome.

If yous're a middle schoolhouse educatee interested in a helpful arrangement for note taking, essay writing, studying, and test taking, notice the free PDF of Chapters 6-10 and take with a grain of table salt, or await for a more topic-specific comprehensive book.

This book was recommended to me by a colleague in preparation for a year long Master's program that I will be beginning adjacent fall. There is so much reading, he told me, that I'll demand to learn to read faster and better.

This volume was recommended to me by a colleague in preparation for a year long Master'south program that I volition be start next fall. At that place is so much reading, he told me, that I'll need to learn to read faster and meliorate.

In my opinion, this volume addresses two chief topics, 1) adept study and organization habits and ii) how to speed read. I would give this book five stars for the good study and organization habits, peculiarly if existence read by loftier schoolers wanting to increment their operation in schoolhouse and college. There'south a lot of proficient advice on how much fourth dimension you should spend studying, how to write a research paper, etc.

The speed reading portion of the book is where I'thou more skeptical. I implemented the speed reading techniques as I read this volume. It's hard not to "read each word in your caput." You know y'all're doing it right now, every bit you read this review. Instead, you take to larn to just visually scan the word and understand its meaning - for example, when y'all run across a Burger King sign, do you "read" information technology, or do y'all simply run across it and know that information technology means "fast food hamburger restaurant."

So, conceptually, it makes sense, but I'm skeptical nigh putting this skill into application. Starting time, it's less enjoyable to me. I like to read. I like hearing the sound of the words in my head. 2d, I'chiliad not convinced that I've gained the comprehension of the textile that this programme implies you should have. I can browse the words and know what they hateful just am I really comprehending them enough and putting them into a pattern that I'll be able to call back later? I'g not convinced that I will.

I belong to the class of people who take become obsessed with reading very late in their life. Ummm ! Almost at the fag end of my educational journey. I picked this book upwards considering I experience that I need to catch up for all the reading that I didn't practise for all those years.

How I wish I had read this book as a teenager :( Coz a major part of the book deals with reading every bit a necessary art for examination training and examination-taking. I skimmed through those parts of the volume (I think I'll go back to them when I make my son read this book;when? like atleast a decade from now?)

I liked the techniques elaborated by the writer for high-speed reading. And I tin can vouch for them, coz I finished this very book in a record fourth dimension of 3 hours, using the techniques mentioned.

The author though focuses on humanities report areas in most of the examples that he has taken up for practical application of the mind-soaring and remember techniques. At various points in time while reading the book, I was left wondering how I could have used these techniques for my science subjects during high school and other not so theory based subjects during engineering.

But its ok, coz I am well past the relevance of those subjects whatever more than in my life and career. I definitely intend to practice and master the mind soaring techniques for whatever not-fiction reading I practice. For fiction, I prefer reading slow so every bit to savor the emotion of each and every word written by the writer.

A strongly recommended book though for the lovers of reading :)

The ironic thing about reading this book is that it took me more than than ii months to finish. We finally got cyberspace during this read and City of Globe updates took some time away from finishing this sooner.

The ironic thing about reading this volume is that it took me more than than 2 months to cease. We finally got internet during this read and City of Globe updates took some time away from finishing this sooner.

I actually took a course at work that taught the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Principles a few months earlier reading this (While I was discussing it with my home instructor he mentioned the volume and then I got information technology from the lie bury (where I bury all my lies)); in that form I improved my reading from 200 WPM to 600 that day. The memory went up somewhat too. Withal, I'chiliad skeptical of the retentiveness rate. They teach in the book to read speedily and under no circumstances should you go dorsum and try to reread what yous read even if y'all've forgotten what y'all're reading or accept no clue what information technology's talking about. It's so hard to exert the willpower to forge ahead.

Nevertheless, the principles taught in this book are Solid. They not just help for reading only they teach you how to take quick, efficient notes and do ameliorate on tests. Dang, why didn't I read this in college before taking the GRE or last winter earlier I took the dang AFOQT? I would have done much better. Although there were times that I had to cram read something for grade in schoolhouse and I would try to read it speedily kind of like how it'southward taught in this volume and would will myself to recollect everything in a few seconds. It didn't work. But when done properly it really tin work.

This volume describes the Evely Wood method to better your reading speed together with comprehension and think. Students are the master target so it's non only about reading faster simply also about planning your schedule, writing and practical tips how to take exams.

The methods presented here are very interesting and similar to what I already heard before. I have tried some with the volume itself afterwards chapter 6 and was surprised how good they work. It's non only about moving your optics faster. A book is read multiple times at different speeds and the reader is brash to create his own outline (or mindmap) of the contents. This active part is pretty important to make everything stick to your brain easier.

I am not certain if I can surpass the subvocal limit merely getting there and being able to read 1000 words per minute without losing comprehension is already a bang-up matter. Let's meet how it will work in do.

I give the book three.5 stars considering it has been written in the 90s and cannot know the computer assisted tools we have now (especially mindmapping software like XMind, Mindjet, Freemind). I also wasn't interested and then much in the test taking office.

There are probably already better books on the market. I can withal recommend it because some of the methods oasis't changed and the success stories requite you confidence that it's worthwhile to showtime learning speed-reading.

This book provided some practiced perspective on reading, more specifically what an average person does when they read. Its runs through a bunch of ideas and guidelines to condign a faster reader.
Similar almost all things, the key to becoming a speed reader is a strong will to do and then and practice, pratice, practice. My general impression is speed reading strongly dependent on a high degree of concentration on the human action of reading. Nothings always easy.

This book provided some good perspective on reading, more specifically what an boilerplate person does when they read. Its runs through a agglomeration of ideas and guidelines to condign a faster reader.
Similar virtually all things, the fundamental to becoming a speed reader is a strong will to do so and practise, pratice, do. My general impression is speed reading strongly dependent on a high degree of concentration on the human action of reading. Nothings always piece of cake.

I would suggest this book to any student entering college or merely starting their second year. A good portion of the volume is devoted to study, note taking, and writing techniques which would work dandy every bit guidelines for someone trying to become their caput around academia.

Most of the narrative or not-instructional segments were success stories about the generic "little Billy or Suzy May" struggling through 8th grade, than they accept the Evelyn Forest class and two weeks afterwards they are reading at 2000 words a minute and acing their history report. I did non notice these $.25 of self promotion, true or not, to be helpful or inspiration but some people may.

I would suggest this book to someone interested in hearing a new perspective on reading. Just it all comes downward to your effort it brand your reading speed excel.
